Temple Sutton Primary School World War 2 Day

news

Year 4 Students at Temple Sutton Primary School partook in a day when history really came to life when Instructors and cadets and from C Company went to the school to help with their World War 2 day.

The day organised jointly between year 4 teacher Miss Jackie Bushnell and 2nd Lt. Jon started with the School assembly where the the students were given a history lesson about World War 2 and some of  the regiments from local areas that had served in it. The students were then taught about conscription  and given an overview of what it might have been like to have been a conscript before being broken down in to their classes for the main part of the day.

The pupils were taken out one class at a time to the main school play ground where SSI Turp was waiting in Number 2 dress to convert the Play ground into his drill square! it was here that the youngsters were taught the basics of foot drill learning how to march and salute. The children were all keen to impress and all worked very hard to master the basics of drill in a very short time frame.

Having 'fallen out' from the Play ground the students doubles over to the school field where they where issued with 95 shirts and taught about cam! soon the youngsters were were wearing cam cream while encouraging their teaching staff to do the same. eventually the staff had applied cam too and it was time for SI Ricks to teach movement in the field this saw both the young pupils and the teaching staff crawling on 'belt buckles' in the grass of the schools grounds.

The real highlight came though when following a safety breif the pupils where put through their paces on an unusual assault course which included a long crawl under a cam net some balance work on the schools bench's  and a final sprint with a twist  - it had to be done on a 'space hopper'. After all this exhusting efforts the students were given a military cool down session, and then took the chance to clean them self before the final assembly of the day.

In total 90 pupils aged 8 and 9 from three classes in the year got to participate days activities and at the end of the day a presentation was made by 2nd Lt. Jon so that all the students had a keepsake of the day and a chance to show of the salutes that they had learnt!
